Looking Back, Pressing Forward

As another academic year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting not only on the meaningful moments of the past several months but also on the tremendous journey of the past five years since I arrived at Lubbock Christian University. This season of reflection is marked by student stories, faculty achievements, alumni milestones, and signs of a promising future.
In this issue of Reflections, you’ll read about the exciting ways our story is being told beyond campus. LCU was recently featured in the nationally distributed Amazon Prime series The College Tour, providing a unique platform for our students to share, in their own words, what makes this place so special. Their perspectives remind us that the LCU experience is about more than classes and campus events—it’s about a community rooted in faith, service, and transformation.
Inside, you’ll also learn how LCU continues to empower students through tangible support systems. Our Center for Student Success walks alongside students facing challenges and equips them with resources for academic and personal growth. These are not just programs—they are expressions of our mission in action.
I hope you’re encouraged as you read about our faculty’s commitment to cross-disciplinary collaboration and the ways our students are invited into real-world research and discovery. Shawn Tyler’s story also reminds us that our academic work is grounded in mission and ministry, both here and around the world.
We’re proud to celebrate our 2025 Alumni Award Recipients whose lives reflect the LCU mission of preparing students for lives of purpose and service. Another alumni story shared features Peggy Spoonts West (’67), who helped launch a Christian K–12 school in Louisiana—teaching for a decade without a salary to ensure it thrived. Her story is a powerful example of sacrifice, faith, and legacy.
You'll also find updates on campus spaces like the new outdoor student area at Prosperity Bank Plaza. In addition, we’re pleased to introduce Josh Clem, our new Vice President for Advancement, who brings a fresh vision to our continued efforts in stewarding the mission of this university into the future.
As I reflect on the completion of my fifth year as President of LCU, I am filled with gratitude—for the people, the purpose, and the promise of what lies ahead. God has been faithful to this university, and with your continued support and prayers, we look forward to what He will continue to do through the lives shaped on this campus.
Blessings,

Scott McDowell, Ed.D.
President, Lubbock Christian University
