Called to Purpose. United in Mission.

As we celebrate Lubbock Christian University’s Platinum Year, we have much to celebrate. Seventy years of God’s faithfulness have shaped this university, and yet even as we honor our past, we are already looking ahead to our 75th anniversary, our Diamond Anniversary year.

Throughout this season of celebration, I have been reminded that LCU’s story has never been defined simply by buildings, programs or milestones. The University is defined by people who understand that what they do matters and who approach their work with a sense of purpose.

Paul’s words in Ephesians 4:1-3 call us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received.  He challenges us to live with humility, gentleness and patience, and to bear with one another in love as we make every effort to maintain the unity that the Holy Spirit creates in our midst. That calling continues to shape who we are as a Christ-centered university.

You will see that calling reflected throughout this issue of Reflections. It is evident in the naming of the Phil and Jean Wynn College of Education, which honors a family whose generosity will help prepare future generations of educators. It is seen in LCU students who serve as camp counselors, giving ofthemselves to encourage and mentor young people. It is heard in the growing sound of our band program and reflected in the work of faculty who continue to expand knowledge and deepen the learning of their students.

It is also lived out by our alumni like Cade and Chastin Powell, who saw a need in their community and responded by creating the Flatland Youth Fund.  They are putting into practice the kind of lives of purpose and service we hope to instill in every LCU student. In a different but equally meaningful way, the story of a lost ring finding its way back to an alumnus reminds us of the enduring connections that begin here and remain long after our students leave campus.

As we opened this academic year with our largest enrollment since before COVID, we were reminded once again that God continues to provide opportunities for LCU to fulfill its mission. The growth we are experiencing is exciting, but our greatest measure of strength is not simply in numbers. It is in the people across this campus who continue to serve faithfully, united in a common mission and committed to keeping Christ at the center of all we do. 

Because of God’s provision, because of the work taking place across our campus, and because of the unity of the Spirit He has created among us, the state of the University is strong.

I am confident that our best days will continue to be shaped by the same calling that has guided LCU for seven decades: to walk with our students, prepare them for lives of purpose and service, and faithfully point them toward Christ.

We have much to celebrate. And we have much to look forward to.
